In 2002 U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta designated Metro Detroit's Woodward Avenue a National Scenic Byway. Woodward is Michigan's first roadway to be designated a National Scenic Byway. The program "recognizes a distinctive collection of American roads, their stories and treasured places. They are the heart and soul of America."

"Woodward Avenue is one of the few byways offering an urban experience," observed Rob Draper, former Scenic Byway Director of the Federal Highway Administration. "Woodward Avenue 'put the world on wheels'" and ushered in a new era in manufacturing."

In addition to being the "Birthplace of the automobile industry', Woodward part of the MotorCities National Heritage program, one can explore the byway's various auto-related sites and become part of the nation's largest homage to its love affair with cars - the Woodward Dream Cruise
