In September 2012, the median at 13 Mile Road and Woodward will be transformed when the City of Royal Oak, in partnership with the Woodward Avenue Action Association, MDOT and the Federal Highway Administration installs a spectacular solar-powered, 30-foot glass and concrete interpretive public art piece to commemorate Woodward's designation as an All-American Road. Total cost is $150,000 and only $4,000 is needed to make it a reality.
The $150,000 structure is funded in part by a $120,000 FHWA grant awarded to WA3. Private donors include: Art Van Furniture, Beaumont Health System, Northwood Credit Union, Northwood Merchants Association, the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce and Northwood Dream Cruise Committee.
The Royal Oak Tribute will be the third Tribute on Woodward. Currently, two Tributes are located on Woodward: one in the City of Ferndale and the other in the City of Pontiac. In addition to the Royal Oak Tribute, the WA3 will install a Tribute in the City of Highland Park in September, 2012.
Designed by local artist Kyle Evans, the Royal Oak Tribute will feature images reflecting an auto cruising and drive in theme. Each Tribute is designed to symbolize various themes depicting the history and future of Woodward Avenue including automotive history, music, arts and culture heritage, transportation, labor and innovation.
The Tributes are funded in part by Federal National Scenic Byway grants, local communities and sponsoring businesses.
