Clean the D 2010
 
Join the Woodward Avenue Action Association, Ferndale Chamber of Commerce and the 8 Mile Boulevard Association as we roll up our sleeves and dig in to make a difference in our communities! On Saturday, May 1 the only place to be is one of the over 15 project sites where volunteers will be working to beautify the area by weeding flower beds, removing graffiti, picking up trash and more.
 
Making the area cleaner and safer for residents and visitors this project is supported by the cities of Detroit, Highland Park, Ferndale, Royal Oak, The New Center Council and William Beaumont Hospital. Tee-shirts, gloves and lunch will be provided to volunteers. If you are interested in participating in projects other than litter pick up & graffiti removal we ask that you please bring your gardening tools!
 
WA3 Projects include:
 
Detroit-New Center – Join the grassroots organization, Detroit Synergy as they partner with the New Center Council Inc. to give Detroit’s historic New Center a clean sweep. Projects for the day include graffiti removal and litter pick up. .   

Highland Park – Join the WA3, Highland Park High School and Sherwin-Williams as Highland Park High School gets a facelift for the spring and the historic Ford Highland Park Plant  gets the TLC it deserves. Activities for the day include, graffiti removal and exterior painting of the school, landscaping and litter pick up.  
 
Detroit–6-8 Mile/Woodward  - Join the WA3, Sherwin-Williams and members of the 6-8 Mile Woodward Business District as we step into spring with a new look. Projects in the area will include graffiti removal, litter pick up, bulk trash removal, flower planting and more as we give one of the most historical area’s of the city of Detroit a makeover.    
 
Royal Oak – Join the WA3, Beaumont Hospital and the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce as we team up to give the term flower power new meaning! Clean the D team members in Royal Oak will focus on refreshing the flower beds located at the welcome signage located at 14 Mile & Woodward and Lincoln & Woodward. They will also be planting flowers in the median of 13 Mile & Woodward.

Attire: Comfy clothing, tennis shoes, t-shirt provided
 
Volunteers:
There are many opportunities for individuals to corporate teams to volunteer for Clean the D.  Persons interested in volunteering don’t need a green thumb or an artists eye, just the passion to make a difference in their community. Help us reach our goal of 500 volunteers this year giving 1,500 hours of their time to making Metro Detroit a better place to live, work and play!

Important Event Day Details!
**********This event will take place Rain or Shine**********
Registration:
Registration will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at each location. We ask that you arrive promptly during these times as teams will be briefed at 9:30 and dispatched their sites.
 
Check In Sites
Royal Oak – Please meet at Memorial Park, located on the northeast corner of 13 Mile and Woodward. Parking is available at the adjacent Village Automotive dealership parking lot.  
 
Detroit 6-8 Mile Woodward Business District – Please meet at the bathhouse at Palmer Park located at the corner of Merrill Place and Woodward just south of the tennis courts. Parking is available in the adjacent lot as well as along both Merrill Place and Woodward. The park is located in Northwest Detroit across the street from La Dolce Vita restaurant which is at 17546 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48203.
 
Detroit New Center – Please meet at the Fisher Building located at 3011 West Grand Boulevard, Detroit, MI 48202 in the Second Avenue lobby. There is parking available in several lots and along the surrounding streets.
 
Highland Park – Please check in at Highland Park High School located at 15000 Woodward Avenue, Highland Park, MI 48203. Parking is available at the school. 
 
Attire:
Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Due to temperature changes from morning to mid afternoon, it’s highly suggested that you dress in layers. As with any outdoor event there is always a risk of rain, we do suggest that you bring a plastic poncho just in case it drizzles.
 
Supplies:
There will be trash bags, gloves and t-shirts provided for all volunteers. If you would like to work in a specific area such as flower bed maintenance or landscaping we do ask that you bring your own tools as we do have limited resources and it is much appreciated. (i.e. – rakes, trovels, spades, brooms & dust pans, edgers, trimmers etc)        
 
Volunteer picnics
There will be volunteer picnics following each of the clean ups at the individual check in sites. We encourage you to take advantage of a great day and enjoy the areas you’ve just worked so hard to clean up. At both Palmer Park and Memorial Park there are some room to definitely get in a game of Cornhole, fly a kite or even toss a Frisbee. At Highland Park High School there’s a plenty of space to be a kid all over again. In New Center be the first to see the brand new New Center Park. Bring your blankets and some of your favorite games to make it a day to remember.
 
Closing
It’s not too late to sign up to help! Last minute friends and family are encouraged to join you help Clean the D, they are more than welcome to register the day of the event at their desired location.
